Why do I need a new pole?

If you're reading this, chances are you already know there's a problem with your pole! Serious problems are obvious: does your pole lean to one side? Does your pole wobble or sway when you push on it? Is the top of your timber pole cracked? Does it sound hollow? Is your steel pole rusty?

Many of our customers had square hardwood poles which were not treated. As a result, termites had eaten away the timber below ground level until there was very little left, and the bottom of the pole tapered to a thin point. Many timber poles had been concreted in, which trapped moisture and rotted the pole. Untreated hardwood poles have a life expectancy of around 15 years.

Should I choose a treated hardwood pole or a galvanised steel pole?

There are a few key things to consider when choosing your pole.

Will your telephone line be attached to your pole? If 'yes', then you need a treated hardwood pole, simply because major communications authorities' safety standards require their technicians to climb only poles with depth plugs. A depth plug is a circular insert which guarantees how far it is to the bottom of the pole, and thus how deep the pole is in the ground. Treated hardwood poles have depth plugs. Galvanised steel poles do not.

How tall do you need your pole to be? If you need your Point of Attachment to be higher than around 4 m, you need a treated hardwood pole. Galvanised steel poles are 6 m long at most; treated hardwood poles can be up to 11 m.

What do you want your pole to look like? Many customers find a galvanised steel pole to look neater and less obtrusive. You will also be able to paint your galvanised steel pole.

How long do you want your pole to last? Treated hardwood poles have a life expectancy of around 40 years; galvanised steel around 20 years.
